At JCO, we predominantly aim to put on patient visit programming at infusion centers. This involves visiting the patients and providing them with goodie bags, games, and treats at a minimum. Depending on what the patients each individually prefer, our members spend quality time with them. This gives the patients a sense of companionship during their appointments that normally last several hours and can be very lonely and isolating. To accomplish this goal, our chapters do the following:
- Regular fundraiser events: This is where members and their guests raise funds for our organization so that we can afford to buy supplies for these patient visit events. Our fundraiser events range from restaurant level fundraisers to planned fundraiser days with business booths, food trucks, and activities for the community to enjoy while supporting local oncology patients.
- Event Committee work: Our event committee members work very hard to plan our patient visit events and are also responsible for training members and coordinating volunteer shifts and assessments at the cancer center
- Outreach Committee work: Our outreach committee works to build relationships with local businesses who can offer material or fanatical support of our patient visit events. They are also responsible for growing chapters by recruiting new members and volunteers
- Assembly events: This is where members all gather together and put together our gift bags, treats, and handwritten cards to be handed out to the patients we serve.
All of these efforts ultimately produce an event where our members bring the gift bags to the cancer center and walk around to all the patients, offering the goodie bags to them, and offering a listening ear and warm smile. Our goal is to make the patients feel as peaceful as possible and bring down stress levels for patients and nursing staff.
